Can a person be sober or be considered sober who quit drinking alcohol and smokes marijuana? This social trend has led to what a good deal of news outlets are calling Cali Sober, now in my day of sobriety way before anyone would consider making Marijuana legal for recreational use or medical use we called it The Marijuana Maintenance Program.
The first time I was introduced to the Marijuana Maintenance Program was back in 1984 when I was attending AA meetings to try and tame an Alcohol and Cocaine habit that was running wildly off the charts if you know what I mean. It was much safer for me to attend the AA meetings cause NA was just getting off the ground in my area and the number of people there still using seemed to cause a path for destruction for me when I was getting clean.
He was an older fellow maybe 20 years older than I was at the time who showed up at my house one morning for coffee and to check on me. He was a man I noticed who would defend me from all the AA Gurus that told me I was in the wrong meeting and I cant attend their meetings well anyway he showed up cause he knew I was using and asked me to try an experiment with him for a week so I did. It was every time I felt like Drinking or doing Cocaine I was to light up a joint instead ok now some people say all I did was change addictions but I’m ok with that I do what’s right for me and my life.
According to some people, there is a growing population among those who were in a social drinking realm or other more dangerous drugs so to speak who quit drinking and Drugging and started smoking instead. Also, drugs like psychedelics are gaining popularity for their antidepressant properties, today although smoking marijuana is federally illegal, 11 states and Washington D.C. have legalized recreational marijuana use and could soon be legal at the federal level.
I’ve been on the Marijuana maintenance program (Cali sober) for 36 years now and it’s what keeps me sober from other drugs and alcohol use. OK, it’s not for everyone I admit but it’s what works for me. And I never thought some 30+ years ago that people would make this socially acceptable.
